Voice box transplant – clinical trials

• April 22, 2013 • Comments (0)

Wow.  UK announces funding for first clinical trial for stem cell-based voice box transplant.  Patients who lose their voice box, or larynx, lose their ability to speak, and often have great difficulty breathing and swallowing.  The potential breakthrough, dubbed RegenVox, is being led by Dr. Martin Burchall, of University College London Hospitals.  In the procedure, a donor larynx is lined with the patient’s own stem cells, reducing the risk of rejection.   This type of groundbreaking research gives voice patients great hope for a relatively normal life.  Please consider a donation to the Chair in Voice at St. Michael’s Hospital.
