Grateful for my voice

• March 26, 2013 • Comments (0)

Dr. Anderson told me back in 2005 that one of her goals was to make sure that I didn’t think about my voice every day.   But I do think about it every day, because I am grateful for it.  In a week, I return to Harvard for the “50th anniversary of women at Harvard Business [...]

Driving the car on two wheels

• March 25, 2013 • Comments (0)

My other favourite blog, Rolling Around in My Head, by Dave Hinsburger, recently sparked a lively discussion about whether or not to advocate for a person in a wheelchair when someone else is blocking their view (at a concert, in this case).  It made me think of how I felt when I couldn’t speak above [...]

Wall Street Journal talks voice treatment

• March 19, 2013 • Comments (0)

Great article , audio, and video Friday in the Wall Street Journal, which talks about voice therapy and the medical procedures that can restore voices when conventional speech therapy fails.   Speech therapy sometimes works, and if that fails vocal cords can be injected with collagen substances that “plump up” the vocal cords.  If the vocal [...]

Thank goodness for donors

• March 19, 2013 • Comments (0)

Nope, this post is not about voice.   It’s a about corneas.  But it sure has parallels to voice – lack of a national registry, screwed up management by Health Canada, patients waiting in the dark (unfortunately, in this case, literally), and a donor who just might make a difference.  My friend is gradually going blind from [...]

Sting Concert Raises $1 million

• March 13, 2013 • Comments (0)

Ron Tite lends his voice

• March 10, 2013 • Comments (0)

The smart and funny (what a combo) Ron Tite  (www.rontite.com) generously agreed to MC our first concert in support of voice care in Canada.   He kept us laughing the entire night.  By day, he is a creative director/media commentator, by night, he’s just damn funny.  Thanks, Ron.

Write the cheque

• March 6, 2013 • Comments (0)

After I got my voice back, I was in with Marta, one of the clinic’s two speech pathologists,  doing a recording of my voice in the voice clinic’s sound studio.  We were comparing recordings of me before my surgery – with a voice problem – and  then post-surgery, without one.  The software crashed after we’d [...]

Halfway to $3 million for a chair in voice care!

• February 22, 2013 • Comments (0)

A small team of 8-10 volunteers has raised over $1.65 million towards a Chair in Voice Care and Research at St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) in Toronto.   A fully funded endowed “chair”, which is simply a permanently reserved bucket of money that kicks off interest every year, is $3 million.    We’re more than halfway there!  This [...]
