Description of laryngeal papillomas

• May 13, 2013 • Comments (0)

Here’s possibly the best description of laryngeal papillomas (warts on the voicebox), which are caused by the HPV virus (the same one which causes cervical cancer in women) and affect roughly 4 children and 2 adults out of every 100,000 people in the US.  The virus recurs, even after treatment, and can cause voice problems or [...]

London

Bill and I are in London staying at the Connaught.  Excellent service and food.  Possibly the tiniest hotel room I have ever stayed in (maybe 150-180 sq feet?).  But then again, I am often (rightly) accused of being a bit of a travel princess.  We arrived at about 9:30 a.m. from Toronto and had to [...]

Voices in space

Love watching my friends do what they do best.  Check out this video of my friend Melanie Doane leading her ukulele students as they literally launch a song into space for Chris Hadfield, currently in orbit as the Canadian commander of the International Space Station.  Melanie’s dad, Chalmers Doane, received the Order of Canada for [...]

New Orleans

Just had our best meal in New Orleans in years, at the Royal Sonesta Hotel’s new restaurant, Revolution.  On Bienville, between Royal and Bourbon.  Quiet, refined, and food not loaded with artery-clogging sauces.  Smaller portions. On our way back now, in New Orleans airport.  No screw-ups yet.

Plague of locusts

What a month.   The day after my good biopsy news after a scary wait, someone who has helped a lot on the voice chair told me her husband has been diagnosed with a very rare cancer.  Just before that, 2 terrorists attacked the Boston Marathon, killing 3 innocents and injuring hundreds who live to [...]

Friends

Rolled out of bed at 9:15 this morning.  I must have been exhausted from the stress.   I was thinking about my friends yesterday, and how lucky I am to have them.  If you’re every wondering what you can do to help a sick friend:  just be there, and be yourself.  In the week following my [...]

50th anniversary of women at Harvard Business School

• April 5, 2013 • Comments (2)

A few favourite memories from a blockbuster weekend with 900 fellow alumnae of Harvard Business School, 1963-2013: 1.  Ann Fudge (MBA 1977), former CEO of Young & Rubicam (now retired, on board of GE among others), telling a story in the Life and Leadership panel about being a young mother of two when she came [...]

Voice of accountability

• April 3, 2013 • Comments (0)

Hope nobody missed Monday’s Toronto Star article by former parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page.  He talks about the risk to Canada if the Parliamentary Budget Office (“PBO”) is not restored to its full power, and about how the loss of his son gave him the courage to take “the job nobody wanted.”  The PBO holds the [...]

Grateful for my voice – again

So my 12 year old daughter, Haley, and I arrived in Austin last night, after the worst customs delay I have ever seen at Toronto Pearson (anybody ever have to wait in “lounge Q” in order to be called by flight number to queue up OUTSIDE the customs hall???), a cancelled connection in Houston, a [...]
