Back to Toronto

• December 18, 2013 • Comments (0)

Why is it, when pilots land in Toronto in the winter, they turn the heat in the cabin up to 90 degrees, for a good 15-20 minutes?  It’s like re-entry in the space capsule.  If you’re having a hot flash at the same time, not good.

Lobster!

• July 10, 2013 • Comments (0)

50 years on the planet, and I just learned that soft shell lobster, between one and a quarter and one and a half pounds, can actually be cooked so it doesn’t taste like an old shoe.   Thanks, Graham and Mary Hallward!

Stuff Gracie says

• June 28, 2013 • Comments (0)

Gracie (5) says the funniest things, starting right as I wake her up (which is, of course, when she starts talking).   This morning: “I’m a nine year-old, trapped in a 5 year old’s body!!”

Another restaurant for quiet voices

• June 20, 2013 • Comments (0)

Gotta add George to the quiet restaurants list (111C Queen Street East, just east of  St. Michael’s Hospital).  I was there recently with my friend Mary Hallward, a brilliant analyst and money manager, and a straightforward, lovable curmudgeon if there ever was one.   Mary’s “just” my age, but has probably been a curmudgeon since [...]

Love that kid

• June 19, 2013 • Comments (0)

“This helmet sweats my head.”   Another classic Gracie-ism.   We went for another ride today, a longer one, and she was thrilled.  The kid loves her bike, and I love the kid.

Biking with the doc

• June 11, 2013 • Comments (4)

So Dr. Anderson and I have now biked for over an hour in Sunnybrook Park each morning, two days in a row.  This is great exercise for me, and gives Jennifer a chance to catch up on her text messages.  Picture me, huffing and puffing, full sweat, cresting a hill, to find Jennifer slowly tooling [...]

Ordinary days

• June 5, 2013 • Comments (2)

Yesterday I went to a talent show at Branksome Hall, in support of a young lady named Sophie Sullivan.  Sophie was in Emily’s grade 3 class at Branksome.  Last winter, she fell while skiing and triggered a rupture of an AVM (arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of arteries and blood vessels in her brain that she’d [...]

I might just start wearing a touch of lipstick.   Not every day, mind you.

Girlfriends

• May 22, 2013 • Comments (0)

Today’s the day:  half a century on the planet.  I’m thankful for many things.  But as any woman over the age of say, 10, will tell you, nothing’s better than a good girlfriend.  So I’d like to thank a few of them today: Lea – June Cleaver’s got nothing on you.  You’re the nicest person [...]

Greece

• May 14, 2013 • Comments (0)

We’re in Greece now, on the island of Mykonos.  Staying at the Mykonos Grand in a quiet suite with our own pool.  It’s cooler here than in Toronto.  Arrgh.  Any time summer is ready, I’m ready for it.  There’s not much to do in Mykonos (it is a very small, barren island with a few [...]
